Congratulations to all the Dachshunds who raced at the 2012 Buda Wiener Dog Races in Buda, Texas over the weekend. Hundreds of dogs, usually over 600, competed to take the crown in the 15th annual event. We haven't heard who this year's Champions are yet, but we'll keep you posted as more coverage is available.

I love your blog!
Back in 2006, a friend whose husband worked at the Providence, RI animal control office told me that they had "that dog you've been looking for" was at the pound. I knew the chances were slim, since I was looking for a standard short-haired red dachshund, This was the kind of dog I had always wanted since I was a kid.
Oddly enough, when I arrived, there were 30 pit bulls, 2 or 3 chihuahua mixes, and the gorgeous guy that we would name Vasco da Gama. he was living in the Director's office. The vet thought he was probably 2 or 3 years old. I cannot quite imagine how anyone would have abandoned this amazing dog. He came to us neutered, house trained, and willing to walk very nicely on a leash. After a few months, my partner was able to convince him that he had nothing to fear from other dogs, and he has learned not to be aggressive in the park.
One month ago, we discovered that Vasco has an inoperable and aggressive tumor on his prostate. We are spoiling him and saying a gradual good bye. Needless to say we are heartbroken, and feel our nearly six years with him was too short. I know this community of dachshund lovers will appreciate our experience, and these photo of our proud guy keeping watch over Casco Bay in Maine a few summers ago, and posing on a dachshund-sized chair in our living room in a photo by the very talented Brian Jones.

Dick Clark, Dachshund and Dog Lover
With the recent passing of American radio and television personality Dick Clark, one has to ask oneself: Was he a Dachshund Lover? Dog magazines across the globe have recently profiled Mr. Clark's fondness of canines, stating that he had up to five dogs at a time, he designed his Malibu home with extra large showers to wash his dogs, and that dogs roamed freely at the Dick Clark Productions offices. But what about Dachshunds? Excerpt from The Bark:
A June, 2001 article in the Pet Press goes on to say:
He got his name because “we found him as a street dog in San Bernardino. As a youngster Dick’s Uncle gave him a ceramic Dachshund, and he’s loved Dachshunds ever since. He’s had at least three of them during the years, and that’s one of the reasons he wanted to keep Bernardo.
And of his Dachshund 'Louie,' syracuse.com notes:
In a 2002 interview with The Post-Standard, Clark talked about living in Central New York and working seven nights a week, spinning records as a radio DJ fresh out of SU. When he came home late at night, Clark recalled, his wife and baby were sleeping. His dachshund, named after an SU roommate, waited up.
“The thing I remember about Louie was he was always there to greet me,” Clark said. “He was just a terrific dog.”

Google is celebrating the 100th birthday of French photographer and pioneer photojournalist Robert Doisneau, 14 April 1912 – 1 April 1994.

Firefighters Rescue Dachshund Stuck in Tree in Cemetery
We couldn't make this one up if we tried! We've all heard of firefighters rescuing cats from trees, but have you ever heard of a dog needing rescue from a tree, much less a Dachshund? Well, meet red longhair 'Cappy,' a pretty rescue-girl who hails from Beaufort, South Carolina. Cappy went missing about 6 PM Sunday, and her human, Mimi Austin, asked for help finding her on facebook. So, her friends joined in the search at about 12:30 in the morning. Excerpt from The Island Packet:
Flashlights in hand, the women searched until they thought they heard barking in the back of the cemetery.
"We rushed to where we thought we heard it, and we traced it to this big oak tree with major brush around it," she said. "Once we got to the tree, the barking stopped."
Austin was on her porch and came rushing over at the familiar sound of Cappy's bark. Thinking her dog was caught in the brush, she started cutting some of it away with clippers.
The women started getting frustrated with searching in the dark, when two Beaufort police officers stopped by to see what three women, a dog and a car were doing in the rear of the cemetery, Mrs. Austin's friend Kim Bonturi said. One officer shone his light up in the tree and spotted the dog.
The dachshund had climbed up 12 feet in the tree, out of reach of the women and officers even with Bonturi's eight-foot ladder.
The women had to wait about 45 minutes until firefighters Vezin and David Evans, who had been out on a medical call, arrived with a ladder.
"She was just happy to be in her mom's arms," Bonturi said of the dachshund.
Cappy seemed to be fine, Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department spokesman John
Robinson said.
The dog lapped up an entire bowl of water when she got home, said Bonturi, who works with Chain Free Beaufort, a nonprofit dedicated to helping animals.

'Slinky Dog,' the Dachshund toy from the movie Toy Story, is brought to life as the "Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin," a ride at Walt Disney Studios Park in France and at Hong Kong Disneyland. The ride is part of the Toy Story Playland in France, and Toy Story Land in Hong Kong. The France ride opened on August 17, 2010, and the Hong Kong installation opened on November 17, 2011. Family Donates Puppy After Tragic Dachshund Death
Not to fear - there really are wonderful people left in this crazy world we live in. A poor Albany, Georgia Dachshund named 'Ali' ate the bulb of a sago palm plant and passed of liver failure within a week. After hearing of Ali's plight, strangers gave Ali's family a new Dachshund puppy. Excerpt from WALB News:
Today Patty Callaway's family got a little bigger. That's because Sandy Jarrell and her daughter Cheyenne decided to give her family a gift that would provide the love and companionship they've been missing. "Being pet owners we know how it is to lose one..it's very hard," she said.
Last week, Dr. Steve Whatley had to euthanize Callaway's puppy "Ali" after she chewed a few highly toxic Sago Palm bulbs. She went from vomiting to liver failure in less than a week.
But that painful silence has been restored by this 7 week old bundle of joy..named Zoe. "She is just so docile and so special we thought..yep..that's the puppy," said Jarrell.
Jarrell caught Callaway's heartbreaking story and her daughter decided they should give the family a puppy from their litter of Dachshunds. "We thought we would give them a puppy and let them have the love back that they had with the other one," said Jarrell.
And she just so happens to look a lot like Ali. "I I just feel extremely blessed that this nice family gave us a dog out of the goodness of their heart and I couldn't be more thankful," said Erin Callaway.
We love a happy ending. And we hope they get rid of those sago palms in the yard.

No Fun for Fagged Photographer
The indoor benched show was crowded and noisy. The day had been long, and the squawk box had summoned California dog photographer Joan Ludwig about as many times as a girl could take it. And now Miss Ludwig was trying to help an owner pose his Dachshund puppy.
"No, no, NO!" cried Miss Ludwig. "Don't crouch behind your dog. Stand up and look as natural as you can. But first take off that coat. You're showing a black dog, so you had to wear a black coat, huh?"
Then, under her breath, "These people!"
"No, DON'T take your hands off her, Keep her head UP. Remember, the neck must rise straight out of the shoulders and the nose must point straight forward.....Now - the farther rear foot - it's too far back. the dog must rest easily on his four feet. Now listen! Never mind telling me why you can't. Just DO it....There. Good. Now...."
"Oh-h-h." The sound began high and dwindled down to nothing. "Oh, WHY did you let her - the instant I was going to take it! Yes, of course I was going to throw the catalog. No, not at you. I was going to throw the catalog to catch the dog's eye and make her look alert. You just never mind what I'M doing. You keep doing what I tell you to do."
"O.K. Now her front foot on this side. Move it - back, BACK."
"BACK. Not forward! There. Now, now, maybe - there! I GOT it."
"It was good, too. Good - but not great."

Hoodie Talk
We can learn a lot from having Dachshunds in our lives. With our country seemingly at odds with itself over the Trayvon Martin shooting, we found this Dachshund story to be particularly poignant. Opinion Column by Tom Barton at the Savannah Morning News:
She said that her mother, a five-foot-tall Jewish lady living in Queens, N.Y., had a dachshund she’d walk every evening when she came home from work. One night, after she got back on the elevator, two very large, dark-skinned men followed her on board. Panicked, her mother stared at the floor until the elevator reached her floor, where she quickly got off.
But the two strangers were right behind her. Then the larger of the two men came around in front of her mother, bent down, picked up the dog and told her that the dog’s nails had not been clipped correctly. Her mother looked up to where the voice came from.
It was Bill Cosby.
The comedian then introduced her to the other man, a New York comedian named Scooey Mitchell, who lived on her mother’s floor.
“They say it takes at least five generations to effect a true change in acceptable cultural habits and standards,” Judy said. “We seem to have a longer road to travel when it comes to the impact of clothing.”

Reunited And It Feels So Good
Smiles!
Caleb Doughty, 9, cuddles with his Dachshund-mix Sky last Tuesday when she was found after she’d been missing 25 days. Sky’s crate was smashed when the Doughty’s Canebrake, Alabama home was struck by a March 2 tornado and Sky was either carried away by the storm or ran in panic. Excerpt from The News Courier:
The 6-year-old dachshund-mix with one brown eye and one blue one had been adopted from the shelter Peace, Love & Animals.
“She’s my sister,” Caleb said. The 9-year-old home-schooled student considers the pets his siblings.
The family, as well as volunteers from Canebrake subdivision, immediately began searching the neighborhood and nearby woods.
They posted signs and placed notices on the Facebook page of the Canebrake Club.
Everyone wanted to help reunite the family with its pet. Someone with Animal Control donated humane traps, which capture a pet without harming it, and construction workers who were repairing damaged homes in the area set out dog treats in hopes of luring Sky.
Flo would receive calls of “Sky sightings,” with the farthest about a mile from the home. After a sighting at Hole 5 on the golf course, several men in golf carts met Flo to aid in a search. “They said, ‘We came to help you find your dog,’” Flo said. “The community was so nice.”
Then, she heard Sky was seen on a nearby street and set a trap in the garage of a home on the street behind her home.
The next morning, 25 days after the tornadoes, construction workers found Sky, tail wagging, inside the crate.
The family drove over from the apartment in Madison where they are living until their home is repaired.
“We were just astonished,” Caleb said.
Flo said, “We let Sky sleep with us that first night and she snored all night. She was so tired from her adventure.”
“I prayed and prayed, hoping the persistence would pay off,” Flo said, citing the Biblical parable of the persistent widow.

Dachshund UN Travels to the UK
Australian artist Bennett Miller's Dachshund UN traveling art installation has broken the boundaries of Australia, showing up Saturday as part of the live art Fierce Festival in Birmingham, England. 47 Dachshunds from all over the West Midlands participated in the event. Excerpt from the Sunday Mercury:
The international body is often accused of having no teeth but there were plenty of gnashers on show in the reproduction assembly.
The mock UN meeting took place outside the Ikon Gallery, in Oozells Square. Exhibition bosses said the scale replica of a former UN office in Geneva was designed to be thought-provoking on the issue of human rights.
